Be Somebody
Be Somebody
“I am somebody. I was somebody when I came, and I will be a better somebody when I leave. I am respectful, I am empathetic, and I am responsible. I deserve the education that I get at The Walt Disney Magnet STEAM School.”
At The Walt Disney Magnet STEAM School, every student is Somebody. We are empowering our students to think, create, and innovate through STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Our STEAM-infused, project-based curriculum is designed to help students find their own voices, develop critical and creative thinking skills, and engage with the world to create positive change.
Project-Based Learning
Focus on STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math
Welcome to our STEAM Lab: a place where our students can create, invent, build, and produce! Our students enjoy access to incredible resources including 3D printers, interactive Promethean Boards, graphic design with Canva, green screen video production, and animation equipment.
Our curriculum is grounded in an active, student-led approach called Project-Based Learning (PBL). Each six-week unit invites students to engage with real-world ideas, issues, and challenges through extended inquiry and hands-on projects.
Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math are infused throughout all curriculum areas. This integrated approach to STEAM education helps students understand the role of STEAM in today’s world and develop the academic and critical thinking skills needed for success in high school, college, and beyond.
Español Hablado Aquí: Spanish Dual Language Program
Students in our dual language program learn in both English and Spanish. Students of all language backgrounds—including bilingual students, native Spanish speakers, and native English speakers with no Spanish experience—thrive in our dual language program as they develop language skills in the context of their grade-level curriculum. No prior Spanish experience is required!
For the 2019-2020 school year, the dual language program is available for grades PreK – 2nd grade. We will expand the program by one grade each year as these students grow until all grade levels are included.
A Focus on EQUITY and DIVERSITY
We are one of just two schools in the city designated as an equity incubator school. That means that your child is entering an environment committed to equity, inclusion, and diversity—a space where they will be celebrated for who they are and where they come from. Our equity initiatives include:
- Culturally responsive curriculum that celebrates and includes people of all backgrounds and cultures.
- A library filled with culturally diverse books and other media—including a parent lending library!
- An equity team and coach devoted to reinforcing our culture of equity and inclusion.
- A parent equity team bringing fresh ideas and perspectives for infusing diversity, cultural sensitivity, and respect throughout our school.
Graduating Fifth Grade
Whose House? YOUR House!
At Disney, we are committed to addressing the needs of the WHOLE child—including not just academics, but also the social and emotional skills students need for success and happiness. We work hard to build a learning environment that is safe, welcoming, inclusive, and respectful for all of our students.
We use a House system to reinforce positive behaviors and build communities of mutual support, respect, and friendship. Our Houses celebrate diversity and achievement through a culturally responsive lens. They also provide a foundation for teaching the “Three Bs” of our school culture: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Empathetic.
